Last week, Season 1 of highly anticipated fantasy drama TV Series The Witcher has premiered on streaming giant Netflix, which received a huge fan approval in general and a recent peak of player count for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Following debut of Netflix's The Witcher on December 20, a sudden boost of players for 2015 action role-playing game Witcher 3 is spotted on PC gaming platform Steam throughout this week, ranking as 14th most played game.
According to analytics site Steam Charts, there was an abrupt rise of player-number, amassing up to 50K peak on this Monday, positioning shortly ahead of newly launched Western-themed action-adventure Red Dead Redemption 2.
For past six months, average players count for TW3 was over 13,000 on PC and it saw a slight increase in June, reaching 18,000 after first official teaser trailer for The Witcher TV series was revealed during San Diego Comic-Con 2019.
Considering this current peak is coming from Steam alone, without including other platforms like Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, this is quite an impressive achievement for a four year old game with no multiplayer mode.
There was an influx of players on such scale was back in 2016 when TW3 received its second and final DLC expansion pack Blood and Wine. By mid-2019, Witcher 3 has sold over 20 million copies worldwide across all major platforms.
Inspired by fantasy novels by author Andrzej Sapkowski, Netflix's The Witcher TV series casts British actor Henry Cavill (Justice League, Man of Steel) in lead role of series protagonist named Geralt of Rivia, a seasoned monster hunter.
Cavill himself is a huge fan of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from developer/publisher CD Projekt Red and read the books. Aside from having played Witcher 3 several times, he finds acting as Geralt is similar to playing but more exciting.
