Last year, action-adventure survival game No Man's Sky saw massive improvement following launch of their NEXT update. Many in-game issues were resolved and developer/publisher Hello Games decided to move ahead with Beyond update.
Originally announced back in March 2019, upcoming free NMS update was scheduled to arrive in summer 2019. Game director, Sean Murray has recently revealed that Beyond will launch for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 14, 2019.

Beyond will be a free expansion that includes three major updates within it and will introduce virtual reality support on PC and PS4. Players will be able to move around in short distances by teleporting throughout in-game world.
VR support will allow you to explore unforeseen alien planets in virtual reality from the cockpit of your starship. Feel free to casually interact with your non-VR online friends or your peers in multiplayer mode while you are at it.

Otherwise, everything else will be experienced like a standard game but VR would make things much more immersive. New radical social and multiplayer experience in Online focuses on bringing travelers from different universes together.
Murray has assured that social features will not turn NMS into an MMO; neither player would require any subscription of some sorts. Also, Beyond update is free for all existing players and doesn't have any micro-transactions at all.

Despite some initial setbacks they initially saw at release, developers have redeemed themselves by delivering player community what were originally promised at launch and by the looks of it, things are now in a much better state.
Beyond is looking forward to unveil next chapter of No Man's Sky legacy very soon and reflects community feedback of NEXT update. That being said, Hello Games definitely will be aiming at something more ambitious in their forthcoming content plan.
