With an overall sales number of 90 million units worldwide, Resident Evil has become Capcom's best-selling franchise.
Without any scope for doubts, Resident Evil is one of the most popular video game series that developer/publisher Capcom has ever worked on, establishing the genre of survival horror and made a hit franchise out of it over the last two decades.
RE franchise of games have also set a track record of great commercial success by selling millions of copies worldwide each time the company releases a new installment and now that has officially amassed a whooping total of 90 million units.

When the Japanese video game developer initially started working on original Resident Evil back in 1996, they were not sure how successful their reinvention of Sweet Home would turn out to be but never expected it to be a best-seller.
The company was so impressed by its success that they started developing a sequel just after a month. Although they developed and scrapped an early version after completing 60% of the game, Resident Evil 2 eventually became an instant classic and even bigger hit.

In 2005, Capcom took a more action-oriented approach with Resident Evil 4 but after realizing how far they have moved from the core survival elements, the studio took a detour to roots of horror by launching Resident Evil 7 in 2017.
Till date, both Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 remains the best-selling games of RE franchise by selling over 11 million and 8.8 million copies worldwide respectively over various platforms despite garnering mixed reactions from critics and fans.

Recently released Resident Evil 2 Remake has already shipped over 4 million physical copies and gaining critical acclaim from almost everyone, helping Capcom to surpass an impressive 90 million copies sold from its entire series and becoming their best-selling franchise.
This definitely has the developers renewed their interest with RE games with more seriousness and hopefully they will easily cross 100 million mark with the release of upcoming Resident Evil 3 Remake, followed by Resident Evil 8.
