Even before the launch of 2021 survival horror game Resident Evil: Village, developer/publisher Capcom was busy working on a follow-up sequel for mainline Resident Evil franchise ever since late 2018 and it may change a few concepts.
It was confirmed by a reliable leaker earlier last month that Resident Evil 9 is currently in active development with few other projects. That same insider has recently revealed that RE9 may be an open-world game like Dragon's Dogma II.
According to known insider @AestheticGamer1 AKA Dusk Golem, upcoming Resident Evil 9 will be an open-world game, thanks to Dragon's Dogma sequel that has expanded the functionality of RE Engine for building open-world games.
Dusk Golem claims that Capcom usually greenlit a trio of projects fairly close together like Devil May Cry V, Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil Village to take advantage of their in-house RE Engine and all of its latest advancements.
Reputable leaker Dusk Golem has hinted that Resident Evil 9 could be an open-world game on social media.
(2/2) take on RE:3 & RE:4 for a remake initiative. Dragons Dogma 2 expanded RE Engine functionality for open world games, the two other games building on this tech is Monster Hunter Wild & Resident Evil 9.

Another alleged goal of working on multiple projects at once is to retain series DNA of all those franchises. Dragon's Dogma 2 is still very much like Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter Wilds will be Monster Hunter game and same for RE 9.
Now that Capcom has successfully powered RE Engine for AAA open-world game with Dragon's Dogma II, both MH Wilds and RE 9 can be easily built on that but the extent of their ambition is still very unclear at this point, claims insider.
Capcom previously marketed Resident Evil Village as an open-world game but it offered a quite smaller, yet inter-connected world. RE series heading to an open-world experience may not led to a major shift in core gameplay mechanics.
Resident Evil 9 apparently has the biggest budget in franchise history and may end up releasing sometime next year. Report claims that Capcom is currently busy developing at least four other games including a remake of Resident Evil 5.
