Returning to roots of a popular franchise, developer/publisher Capcom has re-established their fan-favorite Resident Evil survival horror series in 2017 with release of Resident Evil: Biohazard, followed by several remakes of classic games.
Successfully continuing a stint with modern-day remakes, latest series entry Resident Evil 4 has sold over 7 million copies already. However, there may be a handful of new RE games currently in development, including a brand-new game.
Shared by user KekanKok on Reddit, leaker Dusk Golem claimed at least five Resident Evil titles are in works. One of these games is next mainline series entry, Resident Evil 9 and another one is a modern remake of Resident Evil 5 (2009).
Known industry insider AestheticGamer AKA Dusk Golem previously said that Capcom has been working on Resident Evil 9 since late 2018. Next series installment may go through some drastic changes and won't even release before 2024.
Given how Resident Evil: Village ended with Shadows of Rose DLC, it is clear that Ethan Winters' daughter Rose will eventually become a series protagonist, since she already works for B.S.A.A. and will take down next biggest threat in RE9.
If five Resident Evil games are in works at once, maybe not all of them are from mainline series and Capcom's next remake could be Resident Evil 5, which is one of the best-selling RE titles till date but is considered a weakest series entry.
Resident Evil 5 was criticized for focusing largely on action gameplay and moving away from its survival horror elements. Some critics tried to frame it for controversial depiction of Africa and remake of RE5 can easily resolve these issues.
Capcom previously teased the possibility of a modern remake of first Resident Evil game, which would complete their original remake trilogy. Another choice for a potential remake is Resident Evil Code: Veronica, due to its fan-reputation.
Code: Veronica is a series spin-off starring Chris and Claire Redfield as they survive an outbreak at a remote prison island. Released as a Dreamcast-exclusive in 2000, RE: CV has been rumored to receive a remake treatment for some time.
Since both of Resident Evil: Revelations spin-off games are now on modern platforms, it is high time for Capcom to work on Revelations 3. Also, a revival of Resident Evil: Outbreak series may cause serious hype among old-school RE fans.
In recent years, Capcom made several attempts to launch an engaging Resident Evil multiplayer game without any success. Resident Evil: Resistance and RE: Verse both failed but Capcom may try making a co-op shooter set in RE universe.
Resident Evil 9, remake of 5 and several other in-development projects could take few years to be announced or even get released. Capcom is not giving up on making Resident Evil games for RE fans anytime soon given its recent success.
