Amidst ground-breaking success of TV adaptation of The Last of Us for HBO last year, developer Naughty Dog released a remastered version of 2020 action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 5 consoles a few weeks ago.
Although fans may not expect Naughty Dog to revive The Last of Us franchise anytime soon, dev team had plans for a prequel game. Moreover, series creator Neil Druckmann recently confirms that he has concept for a third game in mind.

While sharing insight for a new documentary titled "Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II" on official YouTube channel of Naughty Dog, game director Neil Druckmann revealed that early narrative concept for a third game is in place.
Despite previous remarks regarding sequel to The Last of Us 2 ever happening, Druckmann said lately that he wondered about a potential third game for years but couldn't think of anything at all that seemed exciting to him, up until now.
He further added that The Last of Us 1 and 2 had self-contained messages and a crucial through line to connect them. For long, it felt like a third TLOU game had no core tenet but now, it does seem like there is possibly one more chapter.
Any chance for a potential third entry in TLoU series was mostly doubtful for a while but all of a sudden, Druckmann has started talking about it once again only after the recent cancellation of The Last of Us standalone multiplayer earlier.
Naughty Dog director has said the following about The Last of Us Part III story in a documentary video earlier.
I don't have a story, but I do have that concept. That, to me, is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing, yet has this through line for all 3. So it does feel like there's probably one more chapter to this story.
It is highly unlikely that Naughty Dog has already started working on The Last of Us Part III since they are reportedly busy with an unannounced single-player game and even if writing for TLoU 3 has begun, it is not releasing anytime soon.
The Last of Us Part III may take up several years to be announced with Naughty Dog being busy with other projects right now. Rumors have hinted at return of Ellie in her role and there was a casting call for five new characters in TLoU 3.
