Delayed from its original 2022 launch window, upcoming action-adventure game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League from developer Rocksteady Studios and publisher Warner Bros. Games is heading to major platforms on May 26, 2023.
First-ever gameplay reveal of Suicide Squad: KtJL recently showcased 4-player co-op play during Sony's latest State of Play presentation. Rocksteady also confirms that players would require an online connection to play, even single-player.
Mentioned in newly-published official FAQ page, Suicide Squad requires internet connection to enjoy both solo and co-op mode. Despite heavy anticipation, an always online requirement can make people really lose interest in playing SS.
Rocksteady didn't reveal any reason for online connection but it could be due to cross-platform co-op that allows you to drop in and out. Moreover, Suicide Squad is a live-service game with a gear system to customize in-game characters.
PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership are only needed for online co-op on consoles as single-player won't require a subscription. Recent co-op releases like Gotham Knights, Monster Hunter Rise and other allow offline gameplay.
FAQ page also admits having optional micro-transactions but exclusively for cosmetic items and won't affect gameplay. With heavy emphasis on loot, players are worried that KtJL may become another huge letdown like Marvel's Avengers.
Many modern games with DRM will usually a one-off online check to fight piracy but a constant online connection is becoming very common. If servers are shut down, players won't be able to play Suicide Squad, even with a physical copy.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may end up scoring a great sales number at launch but its online-only requirement will eventually alienate majority of player-community over time, which may lead to WB shutting it down after launch.
