MultiVersus Player Count Drops 99% on Steam Since Launch

Ever since its Beta stage, 2022 free-to-play crossover platform fighter MultiVersus by developer Player First Games and publisher Warner Bros. Games saw a massive surge of players on Steam, making it a best-selling game of July last year.

Only a month after its launch, MultiVersus became biggest Warner Bros. game on Steam with a peak of 143,000 players. However, there has been a massive decrease in concurrent number of players recently, dropping down to over 99%.

According to latest SteamDB report, daily peak player count for Warner Bros.' platform brawler was 986 days ago, down to 99% since launch. MultiVersus amassed over 20 million players after a month of release but was on a slow decline.

A drastic drop of daily player count could possibly be a response to Season 2 contents that fans are complaining about for a while. In contrast to five new characters in Season 1, dev team only introduced one character since November 15.

Devs originally had plans to launch Season 3 already but has delayed it to March 31, for players to complete their Season 2 Battle Pass. However, people who were waiting for some new faces got really pissed and it lead to a mass exodus.

Other than delays, players were also criticizing MultiVersus' monetization system as it locks off many skins behind premium currency. For example, One Million gold variant of Superman can't be unlocked through gameplay and costs $15.

Many games sees a drop in player numbers over time but for live service game like MultiVersus, it is essential to keep an active player base. Other free-to-play games like eFootball was bashed at launch but have redeemed itself over time.

MultiVersus' player drop is massive on PC but console version is seemingly having a better luck, not showing a deep decline. From over 2 million players on Xbox, active numbers have dropped down to just 4% compared to its peak earlier.
