Only released for PC and current-gen console, 2023 action role-playing game Hogwarts Legacy by developer Avalanche Software and publisher Warner Bros. Games already broke viewership record for a single-player game debut on Twitch.
Amid heavy ongoing backlash against Harry Potter series creator J. K. Rowling, latest entry into Wizarding World universe has become a huge success on release as Hogwarts Legacy sold 80% more copies than Elden Ring in UK Boxed Charts.
According to newest GamesIndustry.biz report, physical sales of Hogwarts Legacy made it best-selling game in UK last week. Total of 82% copies were sold on PlayStation 5 and 18% of it were from Xbox Series X/S consoles in overall box sale.
Warner Bros' latest release had biggest launch for any Harry Potter game, which was 64% more than previous top-seller Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001 but it really became a big hit during its second week due to movie hype.
Newfound data shared by GfK didn't include number of digital downloads and therefore, these sales figures will add up. This is quite impressive for Hogwarts Legacy since Philosopher's Stone weren't available digitally at launch back in 2001.
Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed opening week sale of last year's Elden Ring and dethroned God of War: Ragnarök to second place in UK chart. FIFA 23 loses its top position and comes down to No.3, followed by Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at fourth.
