In an anticipated crossover between Mario and Rabbids franchises, 2022 action-adventure turn-based strategy game Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope by developer/publisher Ubisoft came out exclusively across Nintendo Switch consoles.
Despite some issues, Sparks of Hope were received quite positively at launch by critics and fans alike. Ubisoft had high hopes for latest sequel to Mario + Rabbids but it has surprisingly failed to surpass their overall sales expectation so far.
A latest financial update reveals that Sparks of Hope has failed to meet sales expectation along with Just Dance 2023. According to Ubisoft, both games have underperformed commercially in their opening months during holiday season.
Facing a tightening consumer spend, Ubisoft claims to have some major challenges after seeing a slower holiday in 2022. Regardless of their ambitious marketing plans, Mario + Rabbids game underperformed during final weeks last year.
Ubisoft ended up cancelling three unannounced games during an investor call and delayed Skull & Bones once again. They believe that recent releases were impacted due to a major consumer shift towards big brands and AAA-franchises.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope was launched in October 2022, to be followed by big titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, God of War: Ragnarök and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which caused players to go for biggest AAA-brands.
