On eve of release, 2022 free-to-play hero shooter Overwatch 2 by developer/publisher Blizzard Entertainment was hit by multiple DDoS attacks and players across all platforms were in server queues, ruining launch experience for many.

Regardless of these issues, fans are still flocking over to play and helped Blizzard break previous records of their popular FPS. Overwatch 2 apparently broke peak player record of 2016 original and amassed over 25 million players till date.

According to Blizzard, peak number of daily player count for Overwatch 2 has already exceeded its predecessor by almost three times. More than 25 million players have logged in to play OW2 in over a week of its worldwide launch so far.

Following launch, original Overwatch was able to rake in 15 million players in just three months and clearly its sequel scored a bigger number. Whereas 2016 release was a full-priced game, its successor has launched as free-to-play game.

Blizzard president Mike Ybarra states Overwatch sequel launch to be an important moment for company history. He expressed excitement for new players joining existing Blizzard community and expects their live-service to grow further.

Overwatch 2 launch numbers despite many issues only indicate at more possibilities to explore in future. Blizzard is currently investigating OW2 concerns including overpriced cosmetic items, server-side bugs, PC stability issues and more.
