A few weeks away from release, upcoming first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II by developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision will reportedly have premium content next year, to celebrate 20th anniversary of franchise.
Earlier this month, Overwatch 2 asked players to register with a phone number and apparently, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will have similar requirement but console owners won't have to add their mobile number to Battle.net account.
Activision clarifies their newly adopted SMS security policy for Modern Warfare 2 in a blog post recently. A text-enabled phone number will only be required for players on PC to link Battle.net or Steam account to play MWII on the platform.
Players who already verified their accounts to play Call of Duty: Warzone in 2022 won't have to sign up with a new number. Team Ricochet anti-cheat devs says that SMS verification prevents creation of any illegal account at its very source.
SMS policy for both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 will be same on Battle.net as it already is for original Warzone on PC. Activision will bring two-factor authentication system next for PC version of 2019 Modern Warfare later in August.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II adding a new SMS policy for security that angered Overwatch 2 players ahead of launch isn't a great idea. However, they claim that SMS verification data won't be used for marketing but just security purposes.
