Months after being acquired by Embracer Group last year, developer Aspyr Media has revealed an anticipated remake of 2003 role-playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for PC and PlayStation 5 at PlayStation Showcase 2021.
Earlier last week, parent company Embracer Group teased a shift of development for KOTOR in their financial earnings report. A newest report claims that Knights of the Old Republic Remake is now officially taken over by Saber Interactive.
According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, development of KOTOR Remake moved from Aspyr Media to Saber Interactive recently. Embracer vaguely hinted at this last week, by saying Saber was also working on PS5 KOTOR Remake.
Although such development shift causes inevitable delays, Embracer expects no material delays due to latest transition. Aspyr never announced a definitive release date for KOTOR Remake but it may take at least two more years to complete.
Without mentioning Star Wars: KOTOR Remake directly, Embracer Group released following statement.
One of the Group's AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the Group. This was done to ensure the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title. We are not expecting any material delays for the title based on this transition.
Embracer and their production partner Lucasfilm and Sony were not pleased with development progress made under current direction. Later on, Aspyr Media was replaced with a Saber studio in Eastern Europe to lead entire Remake project.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake was originally planned to release by end of 2022 after three years of development at Aspyr. After firing two studio directors back in July, KOTOR PS5 Remake was reportedly delayed indefinitely.
