In post-launch support, developer/publisher Ubisoft released three story expansions for 2020 action role-playing game Assassin's Creed Valhalla and reportedly started working on another game before they launch Assassin's Creed: Infinity.
Reliable sources have reported earlier this year that next Assassin's Creed game is titled "Rift" and features Basim Ibn Ishaq as protagonist. Rumors suggest that it will be set in Aztec Empire but an insider claims that it will focus on Baghdad.
Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has dismissed rumors of upcoming Assassin's Creed game to have an Aztec setting in a recent social media post and states that Assassin's Creed: Rift will be set in Baghdad, according to Schreier's sources.
He also added that Ubisoft will reportedly release AC Infinity after Rift and it will have various different biomes/experiences/games. Schreier claims to know about two main projects, which are currently in works and none of them are Aztec.
Jason Schreier clarifies rumor regarding Assassin's Creed: Rift at r/GamingLeaksAndRumours in a Reddit post.
Assassin's Creed series has already explored a variety of eras and locations, from Middle Ages to Italian Renaissance and even American Revolution, with more recent titles heading to Egypt, Greece as well as British Isle during the Viking Age.
Even though Rift is seemingly taking players to Middle East region, considering ancient Aztecs to be a possible setting for a future AC game has a lot of potential for Ubisoft, which could be set in historical Mesoamerican era of 1300 to 1521.
Ubisoft will be hosting a livestream event later this year in celebration for 15th anniversary of Assassin's Creed series. Hopefully, they will unveil Infinity and Rift alongside a couple of other unannounced projects to release throughout 2022.
Assassin's Creed: Rift was originally developed as additional DLC expansion for AC Valhalla and Basim will return in a lead role. Ubisoft scrapped their idea for an expansion and Rift became a possible game of smaller-scale than recent entries.
