Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake Announced |
Earlier in November 2021, developer/publisher Rockstar Games silently delisted 2001 neo-noir third-person shooter Max Payne and its 2003 sequel Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne from Steam, leading to rumor of a "Definitive Edition".
Rockstar Games' parent company Take-Two Interactive later teases reviving old IPs during 2022 Q3 earnings call. Today, Max Payne creator Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar announces to remake first two series entries for new consoles.
Remedy has sold Max Payne franchise rights to Take-Two back in 2002 for $34 million and have recently signed a new development agreement with Rockstar for AAA-game production budget, which has a royalty opportunity for them as well.
Max Payne remakes will be built on Northlight game engine, which was originally used to make Control and Quantum Break. Remedy also confirms that both titles are currently on a "concept development stage" and may not release shortly.
Remedy was responsible for first two Max Payne games that introduced groundbreaking visual effects and slow-mo "bullet time" gunplay. A second sequel, Max Payne 3 was later developed by Rockstar Studios, shipping over 4 million units.
Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes will be bundled in a single package, launching on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar founder Sam Houser has also expressed his excitement for their newest collaboration via an official press release.
