A day after discovering an issue with multiplayer exploit, PC servers for Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls 2 and 3 were taken offline by franchise publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment back in January 2021 while they investigate further.
Bandai Namco later stated that PC servers will be down until after Elden Ring releases and it has been over a month since its launch. Fans also noticed recently that multiplayer tags for all three Dark Souls games were removed on PC/Steam.
For months, Bandai Namco offered no update regarding ongoing status of Dark Souls PC servers and now they quietly removes "Online Co-op" and "Online PVP" tags that were previously listed for multiplayer features of Dark Souls franchise.
These changes were made lately without informing anyone anything and no one can look those Steam pages up via Wayback Machine. Dark Souls games on Steam however, still have "Online" mentioned on their product description section.
Dark Souls series of action role-playing games are generally known for their punishingly difficult single-player campaigns. Although their unique multiplayer elements don't see a large crowd, it still is an integral part of Soulsborne community.
PC servers for Dark Souls games are offline for two months and therefore, online features being listed would be more than a stretch. Nevertheless, Bandai Namco should at least make a public announcement for fans before making a change.
Multiplayer serves as a social aspect of Souls-like games as players often invite others to group up against powerful bosses. Competitive players will frequently invade someone else's game to kill them in battle and loot their rewards later on.
Elden Ring lets you bring up to four players but Dark Souls III will allow for a six-player invasion experience. Bandai Namco removing multiplayer tags for Dark Souls trilogy seems like a sign of them not coming back anytime soon, which sucks.
People purchased Dark Souls trilogy of games available on Steam knowing that multiplayer will also be included. Now those servers are down for some time and their mentions removed, are they actually getting what they already paid for?
Bandai Namco can surely take time to celebrate incredible sales numbers of Elden Ring but they couldn't even take time to let Souls fans know that whether they are currently working on a fix or they don't have an estimated window just yet.
