Over a year after release, 2020 action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to receive a multiplayer mode, which could be a standalone experience.
Curious players have already found a series of unused assets for The Last of Us 2 multiplayer within in-game files that hints to Battle Royale. A newly surfaced leak allegedly reveals more details on TLoU2 multiplayer and a series sequel.
Naughty Dog was reportedly planning to make a Battle Royale game for The Last of Us 2 but they ended up scrapping that idea for something that is a mix of Escape from Tarkov and The Division, according to new claims by Oops Leaks.
TLoU2 online is also likely to borrow some aspects of original Factions mode from The Last of Us, as many have theorized earlier. Their approach to multiplayer may have a "single-player-like" experience and will possibly be free-to-play.
Naughty Dog's new online game will be a flagship live service title for PlayStation 5 alongside ten other games. Although script for The Last of Us Part III is ready, they are currently working on TLoU2 online and a single-player fantasy game.
Oops Leaks suggests that new spin-off title will be revealed later this year with a release date set for 2023. However, industry insider Tom Henderson believes The Last of Us 2 multiplayer and The Last of Us Remake are launching this year.
Oops Leaks recently leaks alleged development details of The Last of Us 2 multiplayer in a series of Tweets.

TLOU Online Game
Planned as a Battle Royale but got completely rebooted. Described as a mix of Tarkov and Division with additional modes inspired by the original Factions MP. Single-player-like experience in online game. F2P, first on PS5 with further release on PC. pic.twitter.com/VyY7riRFjL
The Last of Us multiplayer mode Factions was very popular among players, which would allow players to join one of two factions. They would participate in completive matches for points to buy armor or weapons upgrades and grab supplies.
Naughty Dog incorporating various elements of Escape from Tarkov and The Division for The Last of Us 2 multiplayer spin-off could be a great idea if these leaks are true but fans will have to wait a bit longer to play it or a sequel to TLoU2.
