Originally introduced as part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, 2020 free-to-play battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone by developer Raven Software and publisher Activision is regularly adding more new content across all platforms.
Regardless of frequent updates, Warzone players often complain about lack of new maps and in a recent interview, a developer working behind-the-scene revealed that they can't add new maps because of how massive its install size is.
Call of Duty live operations lead Josh Bridge commented on a lack of map rotation support for Warzone by citing huge file size as a major "technical problem" lately, during a video interview with popular streamer Tyler TeeP on YouTube.
Addressing whether it will be possible to bring back Verdansk alongside ongoing Caldera map, Bridge stated that dev team actually wants that but doing that is like redownloading Warzone again and each time they end up losing players.
Josh Bridge has talked about how developers are planning to approach map rotation issue for Warzone.
So, there's a technical problem. The install and reinstall sizes are fucking crazy. If we pulled out Caldera and said OK, we're going to drop in Verdansk, it could be like, essentially re-downloading the size of Warzone. And every time we've done that, right, we lose players.
He also added that at this moment, you can't probably fit anything else than Modern Warfare and Warzone on a base PlayStation 4. So, they are working hard on how to sort these out on a technical level and have map rotation in future.
Call of Duty: Warzone dev team wants to have freshness and plans for a variety of experiences through seasonal map rotation. Activision has previously confirmed that newest premium Call of Duty game will be a Modern Warfare sequel.
