Assembling a ragtag group of "underdogs" from Marvel Comics, 2021 action-adventure game Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy by developer Eidos-Montréal and publisher Square Enix was revealed during E3 2021 for all platforms.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy received critical-acclaim at launch, leading to an impressive Metacritic score but according to a recently published financial report by Square Enix, it failed to surpass their initial sales expectations.
Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda stated that Guardians of the Galaxy launch sales were below initial expectations. New sales initiatives were taken back in November 2021 and they expect to see some growth through 2022.
Matsuda also added, Square Enix will continue to work on sales increase to make up for slow opening of GotG. Despite being well-received by critics, Guardians of the Galaxy didn't broke any major sales milestones or whatsoever.
Square Enix has expressed disappointment for a second time, to sales of a Marvel game after Marvel's Avengers. They claimed, Crystal Dynamics was a bad fit for developing a live-service game, completely ignoring internal issues.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy focused on a single-player narrative, featuring Star-Lord as main character. He would be accompanied by Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon in a third-person adventure but no multiplayer.
