While players were wondering what new Call of Duty game could release this year, developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision vaguely teases a sequel to Modern Warfare reboot and Warzone Chapter 2 since earlier in February.
Amidst fan-debate of whether Call of Duty will be an Xbox-exclusive after Microsoft buyout, Activision has recently confirmed that Call of Duty 2022 is a sequel to Modern Warfare (2019) and a new Warzone experience coming soon.
According to an official press release, Modern Warfare sequel is currently under development at Infinity Ward. They are also working on a new Warzone experience, which is built from the ground up and powered by an all-new engine.
Warzone Chapter 2 is probably a follow-up to original free-to-play Battle Royale and became successful overnight. However, it will be rebuilt due to missing features, performance issues, recurring bugs, legion of cheaters and hackers.
Call of Duty: Warzone was an extension to Modern Warfare and its sequel will be serving as a base for Chapter 2. Activision may not release Warzone 2 with MW2 at launch and is likely to eventually integrate them both on a later date.
Infinity Ward co-studio head Patrick Kelly reveals Modern Warfare II will feature a "Sandbox" mode but didn't share much detail. He is hopeful that in new chapter of Warzone will play the same and define what winning should look like.
Modern Warfare sequel campaign will be focused on a conflict against Columbian drug cartels with many classic Call of Duty moments. Single-player campaign is a gritty take on 2019 series reboot and centered on close-quarters combat.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is reportedly coming this October instead of usual November release window. Activision has decided to move their standard release schedule after massive sales disappointment of Call of Duty: Vanguard.
