In early 2000s, Harry Potter franchise has been widely popular among various media platforms including worldwide box office shattering live-action movies and video game adaptations that were beloved by many fans across all ages.
While an upcoming open-world action role-playing game Hogwarts Legacy is currently at works as a series successor, there was reportedly a Harry Potter MMO that was eventually cancelled at that time due to lack of faith in titular IP.
Former director of product marketing for Electronic Arts, Kim Salzer recently opened up during an interview with Twitch streamer The Real Brandolorian, sharing details regarding a potential Harry Potter MMO, which was killed by EA.
At one point when asked if she was ever involved in a game that never saw the light of day and Salzer then mentioned about a Harry Potter MMO that she was directly involved in but it never got made despite being a widely popular IP.
The Real Brandolorian shared a video of Kim Salzer talking about cancelled Harry Potter MMO on Twitter.
EA came ever so close to developing a Harry Potter MMO. But it wasn't meant to be... #harrypotter #ea #mmo #videogame #hogwarts @OrigGamerLife pic.twitter.com/Dbux383HXY

Without going further into development details, Salzer stated that it was planned as an online massively multiplayer Harry Potter game. They heavily researched on it before building a beta and had much hope that it would work out.
They even wanted to have a mix of offline/online experience, where they would mail stuffs to players, much like Owl Post. However, EA believed that a Harry Potter IP probably won't have a shelf-life more than a year or two back then.
EA leadership was going through some changes and focused on bringing more original content like Army of Two and Dead Space. Salzer didn't mention a year but she worked for EA at a time when first two Harry Potter films came out.
Warner Bros. currently owns rights for Wizarding World franchise and launched Portkey Games label to publish Harry Potter games. Hogwarts Legacy is their next major game for PC and cross- generation consoles, likely to arrive in 2022.
