Originally released as an expanded port of 2014 kart racing game Mario Kart 8 for Wii U home consoles, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe from developer/publisher Nintendo is one of the must-have and popular titles on Nintendo Switch handheld.
A newly revealed report shows that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 3.34 million units during a six month period that ended in September 30, 2021, amassing a total of 38.74 million copies and becomes best-selling series entry on Switch.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has officially surpassed overall sales number of Mario Kart Wii, which had a lifetime sales of 37.38 million units, according to Nintendo second quarter financial results for current fiscal year that ends in March 2022.
Deluxe has even outsold 34.85 million copies of 2020 social simulation game Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch. Amidst a global lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic, New Horizons became a massive hit last year upon launch.
Meanwhile, Nintendo has shipped 92.87 million units of Switch by September 30, 2021, another 8.3 million in last six months. Despite a sales boost, Nintendo plans to make fewer Switch units on this holiday season due to chip shortage.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was third-best selling physical game across several European regions last year. Only other Nintendo first-party game selling more than Deluxe is Wii Sports at 82.9 million copies and it came bundled with hardware.
