Ahead of Outbreak Day annual community celebration this year, developer Naughty Dog teased to reveal all-new content and The Last of Us series fans waited for a possible announcement for The Last of Us Part II multiplayer component.
Naughty Dog invites fans to celebrate Outbreak Day 2021 event with brand-new apparel, Photo Mode event and more. However, other than showing new merch at PlayStation Gear Store and looking back, they don't have much to share.
Regarding a development update for The Last of Us Part II multiplayer mode, senior manager of communications, Rochelle Snyder reveals that dev team is currently working on it and will make an announcement at once "when it's ready".
The Last of Us team was already developing a standalone multiplayer spin-off before launching TLoU2 campaign. Apparently, they are back at work since last summer and are fully focused on multiplayer mode for TLoU sequel these days.

Rochelle Snyder also confirms fan-theory of Naughty Dog job listings for multiplayer mode from early 2021.
In short, we're working on it - we see the community comments as many of you clamor for multiplayer and want updates. For now, we'll say that we love what the team is developing and want to give them time to build out their ambitious project, we'll reveal more when it's ready! Naughty Dog recognizes September 26 of each year to celebrate annual Outbreak Day with The Last of Us community since 2013. There will be themed collectibles and exclusive discounts on game for a limited time to recognize fandom.
This year, they invite everyone in trending #TLOUDay hashtag across social media to share fan-arts, cosplays or any other memories. Naughty Dog also released a limited edition Mondo vinyl and 14.25" Joel statue from Dark Horse Direct.

Due to lack of updates, fans were worried whether Naughty Dog has cancelled online mode and now those concerns are finally addressed. Some job listings have hinted at plans for community hub and in-game economy of an open-world.
The Last of Us 2 files have some unused multiplayer assets that suggest Naughty Dog originally wanted a Battle Royale mode. Whether or not multiplayer project will be part of TLoU sequel or a standalone release has not been announced.
