Officially teased a year ago, upcoming action-adventure game God of War: Ragnarök has finally been revealed by developer Santa Monica Studio and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment during PlayStation Showcase 2021 event recently.
Although many God of War series fans believe that newly rebooted 2018 entry was a beginning point for a brand-new trilogy but it was revealed in a post-show interview that Ragnarök will be marking an end for ongoing Norse mythology saga.
Game director Eric Williams talks about Ragnarök story and what it means for next God of War game, considering it a way for development team to "cap off the Norse series", in an interview with PlayStation Communications lead Sid Shuman.
When original God of War trilogy ended in 2010, Kratos has seemingly moved on to Scandinavia of Midgard to start a new life. After his wife dies, Kratos and his young son Arteus come across various monsters and Gods from Norse mythology.
Ragnarök director Eric Williams confirms ending Norse adventure saga at around 8:30 mark of latest interview.
Kratos and Arteus faces Thor's half-brother, Baldur, his mother Freya, Magni and Modi on their way to nine realms. In a final battle, Kratos was forced to kill Baldur and inadvertently prompts Ragnarök, a cataclysmic event of death and rebirth.
God of War: Ragnarök may conclude Norse adventure saga but doesn't mean an end to Kratos' journey entirely. What plans Santa Monica Studio currently has for Kratos and Atreus in a post- Ragnarök reality will remain mystery for years now.
