A spiritual successor to Dark Souls franchise, upcoming action role-playing game Elden Ring by developer From Software and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment is set to release for cross-generation console platforms early next year.
Long after original E3 2019 announcement, From Software has revealed gameplay trailer earlier along with a release date. Most recently, they lifted an embargo on new gameplay information and shared some screenshots on social media.
From Software previously moved away from "Soulsborne" formula of Dark Souls games to work on fan-favorite games like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, something that they are trying to do once again with Elden Ring project.
Unlike many other previous Souls games, From Software has added an in-game map to navigate through a massive open-world of Elden Ring. Players can place markers on Lands Between and receive guidance on where to explore up next.
From Software producer Yasuhiro Kitao reveals that overall landmass is not big for the sake of it but there is much to discover. During your journey through these lands, you might come across castles and dungeons, or even a raging dragon.
Thanks to new in-game map, fans no longer need to remember every other castle and dungeon locations at heart or repeatedly visit them. Lands Between comes with a variety of settings like an autumnal forest, flooded city or swamp land.
These diverse locations often take player character "The Tarnished" to places like catacombs, caves and cemeteries. From Software has handcrafted these sites, in contrast to procedurally generated Chalice Dungeons from Bloodborne.
However, players will notice some similarities between these locations in terms of mini-bosses, traps and treasure. You as The Tarnished will face off a legion of bizarre monsters and enemies that includes armored knights and ashen dragon.
A fresh batch of Elden Ring screenshots has been shared by Geoff Keighley amidst Gamescom 2021 celebration.

The Tarnished is a master of various combat techniques that makes them an expert in archery, magic spells, sword combat and stealth. When faced with troubles and menacing enemies, they are to shoot sleep arrow or throw powder kegs.
During an early interview, From Software studio have heavily emphasized on player choices in Elden Ring. This may allude to inclusion of a horse-like creature called Spirit Steed that players can summon for traversal or mounted combat.
Elden Ring co-operative multiplayer will allow you to call up to two players for assistance or get AI-controlled allies. Without delving into details, Kitao states that players can summon a pack of friendly monsters using ashes of the deceased.
Exploration across Lands Between feels different with Spirit Steed as they can practically leap to impossible heights via mystical jump pads. In a similar style to Sekiro, players can jump around or traverse anywhere without any fall damage.
At one point, a friendly NPC warned The Tarnished of taking front entrance of Stormwind Castle and guides to a safer route. One is a hard path of regret and another is relatively easier with a little bit of stealth and sneaking up on enemies.
Occasionally, you will see a group of guards transporting a carriage that you can siege in a direct attack or employ stealth tactics. You can loot all the treasures and use ashes of slain enemies to summon creatures to take down more sentries.
Elden Ring core combat seems a lot like Dark Souls series infused with intense fast-paced action of Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. You can dodge attacks and strike back to deliver a deadly blow, incurring some critical damage.
Yasuhiro Kitao also talks about newly introduced combat mechanic known as Guard Counter for players to hit back after blocking. Of course, it takes a piece of your stamina and different than parrying, a returning element from Dark Souls.
Elden Ring brings back classic bonfires of Souls games through Sites of Lost Light to enable fast travel. The Tarnished meets a young maiden named Melina in a hub world to learn new skills or level up alongside assembled allies and friends.
Elden Ring will be arriving for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on January 21, 2022. From Software is likely to reveal 16-minute long gameplay footage in coming months for everyone to have a good look at it.
