Originally released back in 2014, action-adventure shooter title Sunset Overdrive by developer Insomniac Games and publisher Microsoft Studios made its debut as an exclusive to Xbox One console but never received a follow-up sequel.
Insomniac Games creative director has revealed his interest of making a new Sunset Overdrive game for PlayStation platform lately and there is nothing that stops Sony from doing so after its co-director's return to Insomniac most recently.
During a recent interview with GQ magazine, Insomniac Games creative director Marcus Smith talks about a possible Sunset Overdrive sequel. Sony will have no issue developing another new project since Insomniac own rights to its series IP.
Even though Insomniac usually develops PlayStation-exclusive games working on an Xbox title for once was quite a radical move for them. Despite being regarded as "Best Xbox Game of the Year" at that time, a sequel was never launched.
When asked by GQ magazine, Smith confirms being interested to work on a sequel to Sunset Overdrive.
I mean, never say never is my approach. Obviously, we're part of Sony now, but we own the IP and so there's nothing really stopping us other than we have a lot of really exciting things in our future. I would [like to make a sequel]. I think there are a lot of stories that can be told in that universe and I would love to return to it. I had a lot of fun making that game.
After years of partnership, Sony acquired Insomniac Games back in 2019 to work on more first-party titles for PlayStation 4. Insomniac has previously developed games like Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and Marvel's Spider-Man for Sony.
Following buyout, Insomniac worked on both Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart so far. Sony recently registering a trademark for Sunset Overdrive probably hints at an upcoming sequel for PlayStation 5.
GQ mostly interviewed Marcus Smith on features of PlayStation 5-exclusive R&C: Rift Apart, set to release next month. Sunset Overdrive 2 seems like a pipe dream now as Insomniac is likely to get busy working on Miles Morales sequel soon.
President of SIE Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida also wanted to see a new Sunset Overdrive game during Insomniac acquisition. With renewed interest from Sony higher-ups, fans can hope to witness it return as a first-party series for PS5.
