Despite going through a worldwide lockdown situation due to COVID-19 pandemic, upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot has wrapped up production last year at Ontario, Canada, by director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, Roadkill).
Screen Gems has recently given an official date of release for untitled Resident Evil reboot, set to arrive on September 3, 2021. Constantin Film will be premiering across European regions and Sony International to handle global distribution.
A live-action Resident Evil movie series was helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien Vs. Predator, Death Race), which has largely strayed from original source and strived to be action horror films at best, yet earned over $1 billion at box-office.
Screen Gems wanted to re-imagine iconic survival horror series by developer/publisher Capcom and hired Roberts for a film adaption. Reportedly, screenwriter Greg Russo joined as a writer in 2017 and took inspiration from Resident Evil 7.
Resident Evil will be serving as an "origin story" that explores dark secrets of Spencer Mansion outbreak. Johannes Roberts promised series fans of staying faithful to original games and 2021 reboot movie will be set in Raccoon City of 1998.
Resident Evil movie cast features classic characters like Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy in leading role. Sony Pictures has yet to release an official trailer, revealing final title of upcoming hotly-anticipated project.
