The Last of Us TV Series Signed Chernobyl Director for Pilot Episode
Chernobyl series director Johan Renck will be directing pilot episode of HBO's upcoming The Last of Us TV show.
While a long-anticipated movie adaptation of post-apocalyptic survival horror franchise The Last of Us is planned by Sony Pictures is no longer in works, a television series has just been greenlit by HBO network back in March 2020.
Naughty Dog vice president Neil Druckmann and screenwriter Craig Mazin are already finalized for upcoming HBO show. These two will be joined by Chernobyl series director Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead) for pilot episode.

During his recent interview with Discussing Film, Johan Renck announced his involvement with The Last of Us TV show for directing its pilot. He will serve as an executive producer and hinted at working on other episodes if HBO wants him to.
Emmy Award winner Renck was recognized in 2019 for his work as Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special. Aside from his known TV show credits, he also has worked on Bates Motel and Halt and Catch Fire.

Johan Renck has a varied background in entertainment industry, who was a musician from Sweden before becoming a director. He was also an executive producer on Chernobyl and ran the show alongside series creator Craig Mazin.
Mazin has now being put in charge of developing acclaimed 2013 Naughty Dog title The Last of Us for TV. When plans for a live-action film were scrapped for creative differences, HBO picked up its rights to turn it into a full television series.

Renck is discussing with Druckmann and Mazin approaching TLoU characters for HBO show since Joel and Ellie are well-known to everyone. Both of them are very serious about this TV adaptation and treating source material with respect.
