Because of current international situation, many retailers didn't receive their copy of the game before release. Remake of Final Fantasy 7 quickly sold out in many retail stores of Australia and Europe as it was available for purchase early.
However, fans throughout the world were frustrated when Square Enix refused to release Final Fantasy 7 Remake early on PlayStation Store, which left many of them unable to play it on time and some receiving copies earlier than expected.

This unexpected delivery mishap was a minor obstacle for success of Final Fantasy VII, according to official press release. In fact, overall numbers including digital and physical sales were more than previously expected 2.3 million units.
Even before crossing its launch week, FF7 has beaten previous set record of 3.3 million sales by Marvel's Spider-Man. Hopefully, its impressive sales figure will easily be toppled when The Last of Us Part II will finally come out at long last.

Now that almost everyone is forced into self-isolation and practicing social-distancing, people have a lot of spare time. Physical copies were sold out in many regions as fans have rushed to nearby stores to grab a copy before stocks ran out.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is released as a timed exclusive title for PlayStation 4, which ends on April 10, 2021. Square Enix is very much likely to announce a PC version then as well as an upgraded port for Sony's next-gen console PlayStation 5.
