An infected survivor named Aiden Caldwell is serving as protagonist of the central plotline and will be a key-focus of entire playthrough. He embarks a mission to find drinking water supply for The City as it will be on a brink of collapse.
His guide and friend in doing so is Frank, who thinks the only person who can solve this water crisis for them is The Colonel who is a pretty crazy guy and runs a fraction named The Renegades from The City's pumping station.

Using his influence, Frank arranges a meeting between them and representatives from two other fractions. Aiden is called in as well to join them during this meet up and he sees everyone else celebrating at Frank's bar indoors.
From above rooftop of a building in District 2, he sees a truck approaches and hearing a gunshot, he quickly jumps in to fight couple of Renegade members who shot Frank and his friend Matt tells him to get to Colonel.

From there on, Aiden keeps following that truck which came in earlier by leaping from building to building using his parkour abilities. In some cases, he made good use of a grappling hook and a paraglider at his disposal to make jumps.
In between his leaping and swinging, he would come across some startled civilians and in some cases, small group of zombies. Most of them were acting dozy and he even used one of them to grab and used to survive a fall when landing.

Chasing the truck, he crashed through a wooden ledge and ended up in a Dark Zone at one point, where he was almost about to get overwhelmed by swarm of zombies and his infection starts progressing but Aiden managed to fight back.
He wields a modded weapon that is very efficient for melee combat against undead hordes but also can use UV flashlight or special UV flares when he is trapped among a small horde of zombies in a tight space to make a way out.

Through more jumping and leaping, he managed to find a way into the truck and eventually into pumping station, where The Colonel resides and after fighting his henchmen, Aiden was finally able to turn on the water pumps.
This reveals a huge open-world sandbox full of new mechanics and quests for Aiden Caldwell to take part in. It also attracts group of marauders towards Colonel's base and some dreadful mutated creatures to rise from their watery grave.
